Welcome to Kaeru Shokudo

General Info

Tucked away in Ikebukuro, the cozy atmosphere at Kaeru Shokudo feels like one of those neighborhood diners locals quietly return to again and again. This Japanese curry restaurant is small, relaxed, and effortlessly trendy, creating the kind of environment where the aroma of simmering curry instantly makes you feel at home. From the moment I stepped inside, the place had a warm, casual vibe that made it easy to settle in and take my time exploring the menu.

The heart of the experience here is, of course, curry. One standout dish is the ミックスカレー チーズトッピング. The rich curry base paired with a generous cheese topping adds a creamy layer that melts beautifully into the rice. Each bite balances savory depth with comforting warmth, making it a dish that feels both satisfying and indulgent. Another memorable option on the menu is 黒坦々カレー, which brings a deeper flavor profile. It has a slightly bold, aromatic character that stands out from more traditional curry styles, offering something a little different while still staying true to the comforting spirit of Japanese curry.

Interestingly, the kitchen also serves 海南チキンライス, and it fits surprisingly well alongside the curry dishes. The tender chicken and fragrant rice create a lighter contrast to the heavier curry plates, giving diners a nice variety if they want to try multiple flavors during one visit. I noticed several tables sharing dishes, which seems like the best way to explore the menu fully.

Beyond the main dishes, the dessert options make the visit even more enjoyable. The シフォンサンデー is a highlight, especially if you have a sweet tooth. The airy chiffon cake paired with creamy toppings makes it feel light but still satisfying after a savory meal. Pairing it with a cup of コーヒー works perfectly-the coffee here is simple, smooth, and exactly what you want to slow down the moment.

Service at this Ikebukuro spot is straightforward and comfortable, matching the laid-back character of the restaurant. Drinks are available too, including beer and other alcohol options, which pair nicely with the bold curry flavors. Payment is convenient as well, with Rakuten Pay accepted alongside standard methods.

Overall, the space feels modern yet approachable, which explains why it’s often described as trendy without feeling overly polished. Between the comforting curry dishes, thoughtful dessert choices, and relaxed dining environment, Kaeru Shokudo delivers the kind of dining experience that makes you want to return and try something new from the menu each time. The location in Ikebukuro makes it an easy stop for locals and visitors exploring the neighborhood, and the consistently satisfying plates explain why reviews from regular diners remain so positive.

“ Mixed curry ¥950, medium-spicy rice (300g) + pork ribs ¥200 First visit. Arrived at 11:15 AM on a Saturday in January 2026, and joined a queue of five. They opened early at 11:27 AM, with eight people in attendance. Counter-only seating from the back. Orders are made verbally and payment is cash only. Two staff members carefully simmer each dish individually, so it takes a while. Served at 11:46 AM. The curry was runny and had a strong aroma of spices. The bitterness and freshness of cloves, turmeric, and ginger were present, while the umami of the meat and sweetness of the vegetables lingered in the background. Complex and delicious. Even at medium spicy, the spiciness gradually increased, becoming quite intense towards the end, making me sweat a bit. The two chicken pieces were well-cooked and easy to remove from the bone, but they were a bit dry and lacked flavor. The vegetables, including burdock, daikon, and cabbage, were soft and small, making them easy to eat. The pork ribs were average. The rice was Japanese rice, cooked a little hard. 300g didn't seem to be enough curry. I slowly finished it, and it was delicious. I can see why it's listed as one of the top 100 restaurants. The service was friendly. There were three people waiting when I left at 12:00. I heard that prices will be increasing from February. ”

“ Revisited on September 20, 2025 I ordered the mixed curry (¥950) at medium spiciness (cayenne pepper: 1g, +¥0) and 300g of rice (+¥0). The curry roux was light and runny, with a spicy aroma of cloves and cardamom. The medium spiciness wasn't too intense, so next time I'll go for the extra spicy (cayenne pepper: 2g, +¥0). The mixed curry included two chicken wings and a variety of vegetables, including greens, daikon radish, burdock, sweet potato, potato, bamboo shoot, eggplant, and garlic sprouts. The restaurant's recommended flavor enhancer, a squeeze of lemon, adds a refreshing touch. For dessert, I ordered a chiffon cake (¥500), a delicate sponge cake infused with chocolate powder, and a very gentle flavor. By the way, if you order two or more items at this restaurant, you will receive a 100 yen discount on each order, so it's a great deal. Thank you for the meal. ”

“ A Gourmet Lawyer's Food Diary [Instagram] joy_sound [Tabelog] _Chrome_ --- Addictively spicy! Black dandan curry! Visited Kaeru Shokudo in Ikebukuro. It's also listed on Tabelog's Top 100 Curry Restaurants. I ordered the black dandan curry, which I'd been interested in after reading the reviews. The slightly watery curry was filled with plenty of minced meat. The aroma of spices really stimulated my appetite. I was a bit intimidated by the description that it was super spicy, but it was just the right amount to enjoy while still feeling the heat. It was absolutely delicious. Thanks for the meal! --- Likes, saves, comments, and encouragement are all greatly appreciated!! ”

“ The nearest station is Kanamecho Station on the Tokyo Metro, and it's located in a back alley just a 10-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station. This popular curry restaurant is run by a married couple. Next door is the equally popular ramen restaurant, Menpo Juroku. Open only during the weekday lunch hours. It's a small shop with only seven seats at the counter. Payment is made verbally after ordering (cash only). Radio music is played in the background. The delicious aroma of spices fills the restaurant. The menu offers a variety of curries and toppings, as well as coffee, tea, beer, ice cream, and chiffon cake. The spiciness can be adjusted by the amount of cayenne pepper, from mildly spicy (0.5g) to extremely spicy (4g). The standard amount of rice is 220g for men and 170g for women, and can be increased up to 300g for free, with any increase in price costing extra. My go-to is black dandan curry with pork ribs topping, 3g of spiciness, and 300g of rice. This light curry with floating black grains is made in chicken broth and contains plenty of minced chicken, daikon radish, carrots, potatoes, green beans, burdock, cabbage, turnip, garlic sprouts, spring onions, and other vegetables (which vary depending on the season), with plenty of black pepper, Sichuan peppercorns, and black sesame seeds floating on top. The curry, which has a strong Chinese aroma reminiscent of mapo tofu, spreads in your mouth the moment you put it in your mouth. It's delicious and spicy, and goes well with plenty of rice. The 3g spiciness is enough to make your forehead sweat as you eat it. It's spicy, but delicious. The soft and crunchy texture of the pork ribs topping adds a nice accent. Squeezing the lemon provided with it mid-way through transforms the flavor into a refreshing change. You won't get bored of it until the very end. Apparently, this restaurant's sweets, such as ice cream and chiffon cake, are also very delicious. A sweet treat might be just the thing to go with a hot and spicy curry. The curry is delicious, filling, and reasonably priced. It's easy to see why this restaurant has been popular for so long. The homey atmosphere means there are many regular customers. ”

“ This curry reminds me of the watery texture of Monsnack in Shinjuku, but it's very spicy and has a deep flavor. It's difficult to choose from the menu, but I went for the most popular mix (chicken wings and vegetables) topped with beans, and since it was my first time at the restaurant, I went for the medium spiciness. The curry has a watery texture that's different from soup curry, but it seeps into the rice smoothly and is very delicious. The vegetables also bring out the flavor of the ingredients, and the chicken wings can be crumbled with a spoon, so you can mix them in. It comes with a slice of lemon, and adding lemon juice changes the flavor again, deepening it, or conversely, making it more refreshing, creating an interesting change in flavor. I'd like to try different dishes, so I think I'll be coming back for a while. ”

“ Edit - after visiting Sapporo I realized this place is similar to Hokkaido style curry soup, and additionally, chiffon cake is also popular in that area so this place is probably a Hokkaido style restaurant. Pretty awesome. This is an interesting place. The curry is not really the flavor of japanese curry, of thai curry, of indian curry. Maybe it's a bit more garam masala like than japanese curry, but with a similar base. It's also more of a curry soup than the thick curry you might expect. I had the chicken curry with cheese, and honestly, I really liked it. Specifically, the way the cheese was added - little bits floating around in the curry and in drops on the chicken - it was like a nice surprise mixed in. The chicken was cooked really nicely, super moist and flavorful. I agree that the presentation isn't the best but eh. I also had the chiffon cake - another kind of unusual thing for a curry shop. It looked like a drawing, with big smooth globs of frosting on top. Not too sweet, very nice. I'd come back. ”

“ My first time at Kaeru Shokudo. There are only counter seats, so if you're alone, your seat gets passed around quickly. The aisles are compact, so it's best not to bring any extra luggage (I bumped into seats and luggage on the way there and back). The rice in the photo is the standard amount for men, 220g. There's no extra charge for up to 300g. The keema curry was just the right amount of spicy, but I started sweating as I was eating it, so I guess the spices really worked. The lemon flavor is also delicious. ”
